THE PROGRAM
Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawai'i carefully matches children in one-to-one friendships with trained volunteer mentors based on school sites. Please see below for a list of participating schools. Mentors are students from a nearby high school. Matches meet each week after school and a member of our staff is on site at each mentoring session to facilitate activities and provide support for each friendship. Bigs and Littles play games, participate in fun activities, do homework, and form positive and meaningful relationships. Over the summer, matches will write postcards to one another to stay in touch until the following school year.

HOW IT WORKS
If you are a high school student, contact your school counselor. If you are an adult, please contact us directly. If you are a parent or child interested in participating, please see below for a list of schools. Volunteers and students will be interviewed by a Case Manager to evaluate whether the program is a good fit. If accepted, Bigs will complete an in-person training. Bigs and Littles will then be matched with someone that best suits their personality, interests, and preferences. Pairs will meet once a week for the duration of the school year, with the opportunity to continue participating in the program the following year.

FOR HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS & ADULTS
Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the most enjoyable things you’ll ever do - not to mention, one of the most fulfilling. You have the opportunity to help shape a child’s future for the better by empowering him or her to achieve success. And the best part is, it’s a lot of fun! Bigs are typically high school students, but we do have sites that require adult mentors! Bigs are carefully recruited, screened, trained, and coached to provide positive encouragement and consistency to their Little.

FOR YOUTH / PARENTS
It’s a big step for your little one, but we assure you it’s the right one. By enrolling your child with Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawai'i, you give them a chance to see their unlimited potential and develop into even more responsible, successful, well-rounded individuals. Children in our program are typically 1st-5th graders (we recommend starting in 3rd grade), and apply for mentoring services with parental approval because of recommendations from teachers or counselors.
