When single mother Cyndi recognized that her son, Ryan, needed a positive male role model in his life, she began searching for a mentor for him – and that led to her reaching out to Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawai'i. The agency matched Ryan with Big Brother Jason in March 2013 and the two have since developed a special bond.
“The best way to describe our relationship is two guys hanging out and talking story,” Ryan said. “It really does feel like a real Big Brother/Little Brother relationship because he’s not afraid to ask me things or tell me what’s going on in his life when I ask him. And I’m not afraid to give him a straight answer.”
Jason has seen many changes in Ryan throughout the years, namely his increased level of confidence and sociability. Ryan has since made the paddling and cross-country teams at school. He also maintains a healthy diet and does weight training activities. Additionally, Ryan has proudly acknowledged Jason for teaching him about life and being there for him to talk about anything ranging from life challenges to career goals.
