In December 2013, Big Sister Pat and Little Sister Mia were matched by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui. At the time, Mia was coping with her parents’ recent divorce and struggling in school.
Pat has been continuously supporting Mia through scheduled outings and activities. Through her creativity, Pat even discovered baking as a way to help Mia improve her math skills. The pair also participates in giving back to the community through beautification projects and fundraising.
When Mia recently shared her post-high school plans, Pat was eager to help and assisted with scheduling a meeting with Mia’s school counselor to discuss options. Pat also accompanied Mia on Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui’s tour of the UH-Maui College campus to learn about the school’s various programs and offerings.
Additionally, Pat has been extremely responsive to emails and phone calls. She also helped the Maui office with securing funding from Maui United Way by attending the site visit and sharing about the positive impact that mentoring has on Maui youth. Moreover, she volunteered at the agency’s first career networking event, getting personal contacts and community members involved with the agency to speak to youth one-on-one about their profession. Pat continues to donate books and other items to the Mentor Center on Maui.
In August 2016 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maaui recognized Pat as the Maui Big Sister of the Year for her outstanding efforts and commitment.
