Little Sister Gina was once sheltered and had difficulty sharing her feelings when something was bothering her. These concerns, combined with her lacking a positive adult woman role model, prompted Gina's father to contact Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawa'ii in the hopes of finding a mentor for her.
In 2014, the agency matched Gina with Big Sister Joey and the two have been inseparable since. They enjoy many activities together, like dining out, watching movies, hiking, clay-making and getting their nails done – just to name a few.
Gina's father Tom has shared his gratitude for the many ways in which Joey has supported Gina that he may not be able to. Gina is now noticeably more open-minded, has the courage to try new things and the confidence to speak up for herself. Joey’s goal has always been to expose Gina to new activities and to encourage her in any way that she can.
In addition to her dedication to being a mentor, Joey is an active supporter and advocate of the agency. She was able to arrange for generous discounts for matches to attend Hawaii Theatre for Youth programs. Gina and Joey also volunteered to be models for a pro bono photoshoot to help with marketing efforts after Joey graciously reached out to her network.
