THE PROGRAM
Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawai'i carefully matches children in one-to-one friendships with trained volunteer mentors. Matches enjoy activities in the community AT LEAST twice per month for a few hours each time. We encourage low-cost outings, like going to the beach or taking a hike. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides one free event a month; otherwise, Mentors are responsible for covering the cost of match activities. Mentors take the time to listen, encourage, and model positive behavior while doing "everyday" activities. Each match is professionally supported by a Case Manager who is there to support and advise Mentors and parents on this journey.

HOW IT WORKS
It takes about five weeks to make a Mentor + Youth match. First, you will schedule a phone call with a member of our staff to learn more about the program and make sure it is a good fit. Then, we will schedule an official interview to learn more about your hobbies and personal preferences. Over the next few weeks, our staff will be interviewing potential Mentorss, Youths, and parents, conducting background checks, providing volunteer trainings, and entering information into our database in order to make the perfect match. We want each pair to enjoy a life-long friendship, so we put a lot of time and consideration into finding the best fit possible.
Once we find your perfect match and both sides approve, we will give you your own dedicated Case Manager and schedule a match meeting to introduce everyone. At this meeting, your Case Manager will give you the tools you need to be successful and help you plan your first solo outing. Your Case Manager is available via phone, email, and in-person to help you along this journey and will be in communication once a month to hear how everything is going, provide outing ideas, and answer any questions. We are so excited to be a part of your new friendship! |
FOR ADULTS
Anyone can be a mentor - you don't have to be perfect. Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds, careers, education levels, cultures, marital statuses, ages, ethnicities, and households. Mentoring is about starting a consistent friendship and inspiring positive change to empower children to believe they can achieve what they never dreamed possible. You can simply incorporate your Little into your everyday life: play sports together, picnic in the park, take your dog for a hike or go to the beach. Being a Big will be one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling things you do, while also being a force of change in our community. And the best part is, it’s a lot of fun! FOR YOUTH / PARENTS
It’s a big step for your little one. But we assure you it’s the right one. By enrolling your child with Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawai'i, you are giving them a chance to see their unlimited potential and develop into even more responsible, successful, well-rounded individuals. We give priority to families who are of Hawaiian ancestry, live in poverty, have recently immigrated, or have a single, deployed, foster or incarcerated parent. We also give precedence to children and youth that have been abused, neglected, or involved with the juvenile justice courts. The youth we typically serve are those who could benefit from friendship, guidance, and self enrichment. Click here to get started by scheduling a call with a member of our staff.
