About

Welcome to Our Ohana

Since 1963, Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaiʻi has helped children facing adversity reach their fullest potential by matching them with a caring volunteer in a one-to-one mentoring friendship. Our mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

As a member of the nation’s largest donor and volunteer-supported mentoring network, we are Hawaii's mentoring experts. Our programs are based on over 100 years of evidence-based research and our best practices are shared with more than 300 affiliates across the country.  Read more about our impact here...

The goals of our mentoring programs are to help children:
  1. Avoid risky behavior such as abusing drugs and alcohol, joining a gang, and/or teen pregnancy;
  2. Achieve educational success by encouraging and motivating kids to stay in school and graduate from college;
  3. Develop higher aspirations and hope for their futures by exposing them to new experiences and opportunities;
  4. Provide cultural and educational experiences that foster and develop resilience and self-esteem.

finances

It’s your money that enables us to start more kids on the right path. So you have every right to know how it is used. Every local Big Brothers Big Sisters agency is an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with its own audited financial statement. We do not receive funding from Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and all money raised in Hawaiʻi stays in Hawaiʻi to support local youth. We are only able to offer professionally-supported mentoring programs to families and volunteers at no cost thanks to your federal, corporate, and individual gifts. The majority of our funding is used to employ professional case management staff, who are responsible for recruiting, interviewing, enrolling, training, matching, and overseeing each one-to-one pair. Funds are also used to provide free and low-cost activities and programs for mentoring matches. We could not do what we do without you!
